Learn to make beads with stunning botanical themes. Explore a variety of techniques including overwraps; dots, stripes and trails; striped and cased stringers; frits and foils; and encasements. Kristen encourages students to take off in new directions by combining and expanding upon these basic techniques.
Kristen's handmade glass beads blend her love of nature with her background as a watercolor artist. She draws and sculpts with molten glass over the flame of an oxygen-propane torch. To add detail to her work, she makes special canes from multiple colors of glass, and by combining these component parts with layers of transparent colors, she creates depth and captures an exciting play of light.
Kristen was selected as one of the top 5 bead artists in the world by Glass Line magazine. Kristen's work is in collections throughout the U.S., and in Japan, England, South Africa and Australia.magazine. Her creations have been published in many books including Masters: Glass Beads, edited by Larry Scott, Art Jewelry Today, 1, 2 and 3, Schiffer Publishing, and Beads of Glass and Making Glass Beads, both by Cindy Jenkins.

one of the
top 5 glass beadmakers
in the world
"I think that with glass, I have finally found the perfect medium! I had a feeling of 'coming home' when I discovered I could use watercolor techniques of layering transparent colors to create depth and draw the viewer into my pieces. Making beads from molten glass gives me an opportunity to capture light and reflect it. When I am working at the torch, I become centered and my mind switches over to a quiet place where I can express feelings that are too deep for words. Beads are personal and intimate, both for me as an artist, and for the person who wears them."
CANCELLATION PROVISIONS
Bringing in a guest artist is a wonderful opportunity , yet it is financially risky for a studio, especially a relatively new one like ours. As a result we have established the following cancellation policy.
Cancellation by participant
If you cancel in writing by August 9, we will retain a $50 administrative
fee and refund the remainder of the amount you paid within 30 days.
Fees for cancellations received after August 9 are non-refundable
UNLESS you/we are able to find a replacement for you. In that event,
80% of your class fee will be refunded by check within 30 days of
receiving written notice of your cancellation.
Cancellation by Expressive Glass
Expressive Glass reserves the right to cancel, combine, or reschedule
classes and workshops, or to change class instructors when necessary.
If Expressive Glass cancels, reschedules a class or workshop, or
changes instructors for any reason, all registered participants will be
informed as soon as possible and extended the opportunity to transfer to
another class.
NOTE: If a participant chooses not to attend a rescheduled class,
Expressive Glass will fully refund the tuition and fees by check within 30
days of the cancellation.
Studio Location
Classes are held at our three-year-old studio approximately 10 miles south of the City of Buffalo, NY. We think you will find our studio welcoming and comfortable. Click here for our location and directions to the studio.
Equipment and Set-up
Each station is equipped with a Minor burner with a dedicated propane and oxygen regulator and a hood. Students may bring their own torches as long as they have quick releases. We can accommodate both "A" and "B" connections. Please let us know if you are planning to bring your own torch so we can ensure adequate converters.
Clothing
Dress in layers. Plan for Buffalo weather. To provide adequate ventilation, windows may be open and the heating and air conditioning unit may not keep the studio at an ideal temperature. Please wear 80-100% cotton or wool clothing (synthetics melt if touched by hot glass), tie back long hair, wear closed toe shoes, and no loose jewelry.
Food & Drink
Participants are encouraged to keep themselves hydrated. The studio will provide free water and coffee. You may bring your own non-alcoholic beverages. There are several delis, grocery stores, and restaurants nearby.
The studio has a small refrigerator and microwave which students are welcome to use.
Parking
The studio has 10 complimentary parking spots directly outside our door in our parking lot.
