I. Murrini will result in a Franchini-style shaded face and your signature cane. You will start with color mixing and blending which will be used to make shaded colors for a face. Eyes, nose and mouth cane will by built in the flame and then pulled down to a smaller size for component parts to construct the final face. In a like manner, letter canes will be assembled to create signature canes.
Location
All classes are held at our newly-renovated studio approximately 10 miles south of the City of Buffalo, NY. We think you will find our studio welcoming and comfortable.  Click here for our location and directions to the studio.

Studio Equipment and Set-up:
Each station is equipped with a Minor burner, with a dedicated propane and oxygen regulator and a hood. Students may bring their own torches as long as they have quick releases. We can accommodate both "A" and "B" connections. Please let us know if you are planning to bring your own torch so we can ensure adequate converters.

Clothing
Dress in layers. Plan for Buffalo weather. To provide adequate ventilation, windows may be open and the heating and air conditioning unit may not keep the studio at an ideal temperature. Please wear 80-100% cotton or wool clothing (synthetics melt if touched by hot glass), tie back long hair, wear closed toe shoes, and no loose jewelry. Long artificial nails may pose a hazard for beginners.

Food & drink
Participants are encouraged to keep themselves hydrated. Please bring your own water or other non-alcoholic beverages. There are several delis, grocery stores, and restaurants nearby.

The studio has a small refrigerator and microwave which students are welcome to use.

Parking
The studio has 10 complimentary parking spots right outside our door in our
well-lit parking lot.

Local Attractions
Western New York offers many sites worth exploring. Why not add a day or two to your trip and visit Niagara Falls, the Darwin Martin House or Graycliff  designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the Albright Knox Art Gallery, the Burchfield Penney Art Center, or take a cruise on Lake Erie or the Erie Canal.

Food & Lodging
There are a number of hotels/motels and a range of eating establishments within 5 miles of the studio. I have negotiated a discounted rate for participants at the Best Western Inn, a new hotel 1.5 miles from the studio. Here is a partial list of additional motels for your convenience: Holiday Inn Express, Red Roof Inn , Comfort Inn. Oma's Guest Haus is also across the street.

II. Sculptural Techniques will examine several different methods for achieving human body and animal sculptural forms. The techniques include cold assembly, hot sculpture, detail overlay, temperature control, tool use, drilling holes with hot tungsten pick, and the correct application of murrini.
This course is divided into three parts:
I.       Murrini
II.      Sculptural Techniques
III.     Encasement
III. Encasement will produce a small floral paperweight. Floral setup techniques include using blended colors, ribbed cane and overlays as components for creating leaf stock, stems, buds, ball flowers, petals, and stamen.  You will then assemble and arrange the floral components into a "setup" with a quick lesson in frit making to use as a background. A Stumpsucker will be used to vacuum encase a sculptural or floral setup in Schott crystal.
